Travel Basketball

Our Travel Basketball teams require a competitive try-out process open to all players within each team’s grade and gender for players grades 3,4,5,6,7,and 8th. Players chosen for UMBC Travel teams do not play as part of our intramural program.  Players not chosen to be a part of the travel team are automatically placed into their appropriate grade intramural league.  UMBC rules require you to tryout for your own grade only; unless there is not a team at your grade and then you can try put up or down (if birthday permits).

Travel basketball is a grand commitment that each family should think about and be fully aware of before embarking on this journey. Upper Moreland Basketball Club Travel Teams play as part of the Inter-County Basketball Association (ICBA: which spans much of southeastern Pennsylvania.   Because of the additional fees incurred for registration in the ICBA, additional referee fees and more advanced uniforms, players chosen for the travel team are required to pay an additional fee to cover a fraction of those costs.

It is expected that all players and families will be committed to the goals of improving as a team, supporting continued growth and producing a winning basketball product during their participation with our Travel Basketball Program. It should be understood that while the players, coaches and fans may be playing "away" from Upper Moreland you are still representing our community and subject to both the ICBA rules and regulations as well as the UMBC conduct policies.

Tryouts dates (usually 3 or 4) are set as soon as coaches are selected usually in late September or early October.  Each player is required to attend 2 tryouts to be considered for the team.  A player may only try out for the grade the are in.  ICBA rules require players to play for their township.  2 exception per grade are granted however only for adjoining townships.  If a player is not chosen for the travel team they will be automatically placed in our intramural league.

When making the team the coach is expecting that basketball is 2nd only to academics during the season.  Other sports should not be interfering with the winter sport of Travel Basketball beginning Nov 17th and ending March 21st. The Head Coach is in control of setting practice times and playing time.  Skills, attitude and commitment along with other factors are all acceptable variables why your child may not be getting as much playing time as others.  Our intramural program DOES guarantee equal playing time if that is the route you want to pursue.  The coach may also request additional funds to play in other tournaments and leagues during the season and off season.  This is your choice if you want to participate and not required.

Practices will usually be 2-3X per week in Oct-Dec and then 1-2X in Dec-March with 1-3 games a week set by ICBA.  There is a preseason ICBA tournament which your registration cost covers in late Nov/early Dec while the regular season begins middle of Dec and runs through middle of Feb.  Playoffs begin Feb and run through beginning of March.  UMBC hosts a tournament in March that is also covered in your registration cost.

We typically have 1 team per grade per gender however the board may consider a 2nd team at a specific grade if there is a competitive A team(div 1 or 2) and more than enough children to field a competitive 6 team intramural program.

If you are registering for Travel - PLEASE DO NOT also register for in house.  You will be automatically transferred if you do not make the travel team.
